The Wine
With 15 unbroken generations devoted to Portuguese wine, this family dynasty is synonymous with quality. Barão de Vilar is the newest port house, ironically founded by a family with the longest history in port (they founded the great Quinta do Noval in 1715). Cousins Cristiano, Fernando and Alvaro Van Zeller got together to create this terrific winery that makes fortified and still wine. Their Grande Reserva is an intense blend of two top Douro grapes, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, from vines aged 40 to 70 years old. The Franca lends body and richness, while Nacional brings finesse and fragrance. After a year in oak this cuvée is graceful with silky tannins. It’s ready to drink now but will keep. Great with a rich herby casserole.

Phenomenal. A beautiful rich full wine with a very full body. I am re-ordering
