Austria makes some exceptional wines, characterised by their exquisite balance, elegant reds and mineral-laden whites. Blauer Zweigelt is Austria’s most widely planted grape, yet it remains somewhat elusive in the UK. A product of Dr Fritz Zweigelt’s 1922 experiment of crossing two grape varieties, this grape thrives in cooler climates, producing silky, fruit-rich reds. This vintage hails from a cellar founded in 1938 by members of the local Wine Growers Guild in historic Krems, a town with eight centuries of winemaking tradition. Krems’ clay and limestone work their magic to bring out the juicy fruit and mineral freshness of Blauer Zweigelt. Best enjoyed with white meats, heartier fish dishes and rice pilaf.
