From a Chilean winery that dates back to 1765 and the same family that founded world-famous Los Vascos, this is a seriously rich red. It’s a powerful blend of Carmenère, Syrah and Petit Verdot, aged in fine oak barrels, so deep, dark and complex.

Master of Wine Tim Atkin wrote, “Encierra makes some of the hidden jewels of Colchagua Valley”, awarding one of their pure Carmenères 96 points, and 93 points to their Family Reserve. It was founded six generations ago in Colchagua by the Eyzaguirre Echenique family, the same who set up Los Vascos nearby in 1975, which is now a joint venture with Domaines Barons de Rothschild. This is a tremendous rich red – a blend of Carmenère (50%), with equal portions of Syrah and Petit Verdot – planted on the lower mountain, granite slopes. 18 months in fine, part-new Seguin Moreau oak barrels adds superb complexity. At 15%, it’s a big wine that’ll benefit from opening early and decanting, or cellaring. A fine red, ideal with steak or a rich casserole.

"A powerful, yet polished and sleek, fine Chilean red to match the best in the world" Leonardo Bassano
