If you’re looking to intrigue any whisky lovers in your life, pour them a glass of this and ask them to guess where it’s from. We’re pretty certain they’ll not say South Africa. It hails from the James Sedgwick Distillery, established in 1886 on the banks of the Berg River at the foot of the Bainskloof Pass, 45 minutes from Cape Town. Sedgwick’s master distiller is the multi award winner Andy Watts. For the first three years of this whisky’s life, Andy aged it in a mixture of third and fourth fill bourbon casks. He then transferred it to old PX sherry casks which imbued the deep colour and spicy complexity of Three Ships. Bottled at 53.7%, this whisky will reward you with extra aromas and flavours if you add a splash of water. Lovely stuff.
