ABOUT US

We’ve enjoyed sharing great wine discoveries with fellow wine lovers for over 230 years and we’re delighted you’ve joined us. Find out more about the Averys story …

PIONEERS OF GREAT TASTE SINCE 1793

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting us over a glass of wine yet, that’s the perfect place to start. You’ll find us just off Bristol’s famous Park Street, past the Banksy and opposite the oldest pub in town. Be sure to peek downstairs at our historic cellars which once housed our bottling line and blending tanks.

Above the shop are our team of Personal Wine Advisors, ready to take your call. From great-value tipples to sourcing fine wines, they’ll give you the inside track. No pushy selling. No wine snobbery. Just great advice.

The world’s greatest wine discoveries … brought to you by Averys

Our story began in 1793 but it was in the 1920s with Ronald Avery at the helm that Averys sailed to success. Unusually for the time, Ronald travelled far and wide to meet winemakers and get to know them personally. It’s those close relationships that made all the difference, and still do today.

An early champion of right-bank claret, he was the first person to list Petrus, now Bordeaux’s most sought-after and expensive wine. Ironically, no one would buy it at the time!

How could anyone follow in these footsteps? That was the question that troubled Ronald’s son, John. But it needn’t have done.

In 1964, John spent his summer holiday in California and persuaded his father to introduce Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon to the UK, the first cult Napa Valley wine.

The following year he travelled to Australia and came home with an order for 10 cases of the now iconic Penfolds Grange. As for New Zealand, John imported the first commercial Kiwi wines in 1978, before they even produced a single Sauvignon Blanc!

In 1999, Mimi Avery became the fifth generation to join the family business, pushing things further than the last and venturing off-the-beaten-track to find the world’s most exciting wine discoveries.

Today we continue to uphold the pioneering spirit that put us on the world wine map and there’s still nothing we love more than sharing our latest finds with you.
