Flavour Profile
Legend has it that the hill on which the Grola vineyard stands was the birthplace of Corvina – the signature grape of the Valpolicella Classico region. The Allegrini family’s Grola pays tribute to this story, and blends Corvina Veronese with Corvinone and Rondinella. The result: a richly opulent red wine of great renown, which has helped to raise the profile of Valpolicella to the heights it deserves.
The grapes are all grown on this unique single vineyard which enjoys high levels of sunshine and boasts well-drained calcareous and clay soils. The high-density vines are on average 40 years old, so produce low yields to give the finished wine powerful concentration and depth.
With 16 months ageing in oak, half in second use barriques and half in larger barrels, the oak spice is a subtle component of the wine, the wood maturation designed to allow the wine to mature rather than be overtly oaky. Finally 10 months in bottle before release ensures a silky, complex red with sublime notes of blackberries, cherries and a lift of violets, with hints of vanilla, tobacco and dark chocolate. All this richness is delivered on a wave of polished tannins and freshness. A great match with osso buco, rich pasta dishes or pork.
