The Wine
Saint-Romain is a beautiful little cliff-top village in the Côte de Beaune, overlooking Benjamin Leroux’s tiny, half-hectare Sous le Château vineyard. Planted at the foot of the cliff, Bernard’s organically grown vines – aged between 20 and 60 years – are sheltered from the cold northerly winds. The plot also benefits from an abundance of stones, which absorb the heat of the day and radiate it at night to help bring the fruit to full, plump ripeness. Hand harvested in small batches, the grapes are gently pressed prior to fermentation and the wine aged in large oak foudres, with a tiny portion in new oak barrique to add a subtle, toasty, vanilla dimension to this fruit-driven white. A delectable white Burgundy from this outstanding producer.
