Flavour Profile
Canet Rôtie is a bold, juicy southern French red wine inspired by the highly prized reds of Côte-Rôtie in France’s Rhône Valley.
It’s crafted at Château Canet, a beautiful 19th-century estate just outside of Carcassonne, in the heart of southern France’s Minervois wine region. The estate is owned by Floris and Victoria Lemstra, who spent 15 years honing their craft in Burgundy before settling in the Languedoc. Today, the winery is one of the Minervois’ leading domaines.
For this wine, Floris selects the finest parcels of rich, bold Syrah and gives them an aromatic lift by adding a small amount of Viognier. The result is a sumptuous red wine with ripe blackcurrant and blackberry flavours and a fresh, juicy finish. It’s powerful yet refined – and one of the best Côte-Rôtie lookalikes we’ve tasted, especially given the price.
And it seems Jonathan Ray, Drinks Editor for The Spectator agrees, praising the 2023 vintage for being “a Côte-Rôtie in all but name (and price) … I love that it’s half what you would pay for Rhône Valley Côte-Rôtie.
Plush and moreish, Canet Rôtie makes a great glass solo, or pair with barbecued meats, steak or aged cheeses.
