English sparkling wine now ranks among the finest in the world. True to form, the Laithwaite family has been leading the way, with Barbara’s trophy-winning Wyfold and Henry’s Harrow & Hope. After honing his winemaking skills in Bordeaux and Australia, Henry returned to the UK in 2010 to plant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier on a south-facing slope in Marlow. The chalk and flint soils are perfect for vines – though less so for machinery! By 2013, their winery was complete, with guidance from sparkling wine legends like Tony Jordan of Domaine Chandon Australia and Mike Roberts of Ridgeview. The ninth release of their classic Brut Reserve is complex, creamy and beautifully elegant.
