The Story Behind the Bottle
This great madeira producer was founded in 1850 by João Gonçalves Henriques. It was continued after his death 65 years later by his sons, João, Joaquim and Eduardo and so the name became Henriques & Henriques. The family’s lineage stopped in 1968 and with no children to pass the firm onto, friends and colleagues took over the business. Today they are one of the only madeira producers to own vineyards – Verdelho and Terrantez grown on steep terraces – but also work closely with long-term growers to obtain grapes from them too. They can boast madeiras back to 1928, still ageing in their cellars. This is their luscious 10-year-old Malmsey madeira, the sweetest style. Gorgeous with Christmas pudding or poured over finest vanilla ice cream.
