The Story Behind the Bottle

The luscious La Chimère de La Clarière is a red wine that breaks all the rules, blending La Clarière’s Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux with blackberry-scented Rhône Syrah.

Blending claret with a riper style of Rhône red may seem revolutionary, but it’s a tradition that dates back to before appellation contrôlée rules and was common until the 20th century. It was often nicknamed Le Travail à l’Anglaise – ‘the English way’ – because its style was aimed at the English palate. A rich, deliciously ripe red that is ready for drinking right away.

In recent years Château Palmer revived the tradition, charging almost as much per bottle as they do for their Grand Vin! With a Bordeaux château of his own, Tony Laithwaite set about making his own ‘Bordeaux-Hermitagé’ style of wine. La Chimère de La Clarière is the result.
