Multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has been a whisky connoisseur for years. So when she discovered that her great-grandfather, Davis Hogue, made moonshine during Prohibition, she created SirDavis American Whisky in his honour.
Beyoncé chose not to use the American spelling ‘whiskey’ (with an ‘e’) to reflect her love for Scotch and Japanese spirits. To bring her idea to life, she worked with five-time International Whisky Competition Master Distiller of the Year Dr Bill Lumsden and Moët Hennessy (of Dom Pérignon Champagne and Hennessy Cognac fame).
SirDavis American Whisky is made from a near-equal rye and barley mash and finished – like many top Scotch whiskies – in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. Finally, it’s blended and bottled in Texas to reflect Beyoncé’s own origins.
According to Dr Bill Lumsden: “I think together we’ve risen to something that I’m hugely excited about. And I think whisky drinkers are going to be blown away because it’s really quite different from anything I’ve tasted before.”
Enjoy as a perfect fireside dram, served neat or with just a dash of water. Or try Beyoncé’s favourite whisky cocktail, the Honey Bee: put 60ml SirDavis American Whisky into a shaker with 20ml freshly squeezed lemon juice, 15ml honey syrup and ice. Shake to dilute, pour into a coupe glass – and enjoy.
