Szt. Tamás 1st Growth Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 50cl 2018

Sweet, golden Tokaji is Hungary’s most noble wine, with 400 years of history and royal patronage. It graced the tables of kings and inspired epic poetry for centuries – and now has a new lease of life thanks to the Royal Tokaji Company.
The “Puttonyos” designation was once a literal count of the baskets (puttony) of Aszú berries. Today, it marks the level of residual sugar in the wine. At 6 Puttonyos, this is one of Tokaji’s richest, most expressive and opulent styles. With over 150 g/L of natural sweetness, it sounds decadent – and it is – yet the region’s trademark acidity keeps it vibrant.
Its secret is botrytis, which affects certain Hungarian vineyards (as it does in France's Sauternes), resulting in naturally raisined grapes (Aszú) of remarkable intensity.
In truly exceptional years Royal Tokaji selects the best berries from its finest vineyards and carefully produces a few barrels of Single Vineyard Aszú. This is made from the fruit of the renowned Szt. Tamás first-growth vineyard in Mád, whose red-clay volcanic soils and mature Furmint vines yield exceptional Aszú berries.
Decanter gave this a 94 point score, noting its “creamy concentration of apricot tart, sweet vanilla, nutmeg spices, and a long, pure finish.” Chill down and pour a glass of history. Superb with desserts or blue cheeses.
