Flavour Profile
Only on its fifth release and Telmo Rodriguez’s 100-point Yjar has already built up a cult following as one of the region’s most exciting Riojas.
The grapes come from a plot within a ‘Grand Cru’ triangle of Labastida, San Vicente and Peñacerrada. Here are some of the oldest goblet-trained, high-altitude vineyards (600-800m altitude) in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region.
The result is a wine of remarkable freshness, elegance and balance, with polished tannins. Wine expert James Suckling awarded it 100 points, describing it as “This wine has depth, persistence and an incredibly stylish profile”, while Wine Advocate gave it 98 points and wrote, ""The finest Yjar to date has to be the 2021 Yjar. It's super elegant and aromatic"".
It’s a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, grown together in the vineyard and co-fermented in open-top oak vats and aged in barrel for 30 months. Very fine and ageworthy.
