Montrose is one of the very top estates of Saint-Estèphe, boasting some of the Haut-Médoc's longest-lived wines. Its history goes back centuries and it was once a part of Calon-Ségur. However, it was split off due its unique hillside, gravel terroir. It takes its name from the fact that this hill, covered once in heather, used to turn a lovely pink (rose in French) and so became know as 'le mont rose'. Its current owners, the Bouygues family, bought it in 2006 and have since accomplished considerable renovation to increase its quality and environmental credentials. The brothers also brought in leading consultant Jean-Bernard Delmas. Ageing in 60% new French oak for 18 months increases the power and depth of this "compelling" (WA) claret.
