High scores from many critics, including 94-95 from Wine Advocate, prove that the château's newish owners (the Chanel group) are doing a magnificent job. Plots that rub shoulders with the Right Bank’s very best make a fine, polished, elegant claret.

This is no ordinary claret. It’s from one of the oldest estates in Saint-Émilion. In 1985 its vineyards were awarded Grand Cru Classé status for their excellence and until 2017, winemaking was under the direction of two of the region's best – Nicolas Thienpont of Le Pin and Stéphane Derenoncourt, one of Bordeaux's top wine consultants. 2017 was the first vintage under new owners The Chanel Group and Nicolas Audebert, who runs Premier Grand Cru Classé Château Canon next door. Both Châteaux Canon and Magdelaine have vineyards adjacent to Berliquet's. This eloquently graceful, Merlot-rich claret was cropped very low at 30hl/hectare and aged 16 months in oak barriques (50% new). It's a very polished, silky, elegant Bordeaux. Worth tucking away.
