The wines of Château La Mission Haut-Brion vie for top-dog position with those of Haut-Brion, which lies just across the road in the suburbs of Bordeaux city. Both have been under the same ownership of Domaine Clarence Dillon since 1983, when a complete renovation of both the vineyards and the winemaking facilities began on this 16th-century property. The vineyards of La Mission lie on a gravel ridge, up to 18 metres deep, which would account for its layers of richness and power, while ageing is in 100% new oak barrels for at least 18 months. This adds even more complexity, along with an increase of Merlot in the blend since the 1990s. Bordeaux's 2022 vintage is exceptional, "really something unique" (Suckling). A wine to look forward to.
