Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2022

Pauillac AOC 5eme Grand Cru Classe

Run by François Xavier Borie, this fifth growth Pauillac estate consistently outperforms its classification. The 2022 more than bears this out – "classy and integrated" and reminiscent "of this estate's brilliant 1982" wrote Wine Advocate (95-97pts).

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of the oldest estates of the Médoc, its land planted with vines as far back as the 1500s. Awarded 5ème cru classé in the 1855 classification, it far excels this label every vintage. Owned by only three families over the centuries, one of them being Lacoste, while Puy is a French term for 'small hill'. The Borie family have owned the property since the 1970s, with François Xavier and his daughter Emeline in charge today. Its vineyards are unusual for lying in a single 90-hectare block, surrounding the château, and are planted on prime deep gravel beds, over limestone. 2022 is a very fine release with a "layered and concentrated palate that exhibits beautiful structural refinement and purity of fruit" (WA).

"A brilliant classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, violets" William Kelley
