Vondeling in Paardeberg is the pride and joy of English born Julian Johnsen. In the 1990s, he came to South Africa to work a vintage at a relative's wine estate and never wanted to leave. He bought Vondeling in 2001 and right from the start, aimed for the top, engaging the award winning winemaker Matthew Copeland. Babiana is their flagship white, the 2015 and 2019 vintages of which were awarded a top 5-Stars by Platter. Named after Babiana noctiflora, a tiny, rare flower unique to the Paardeberg mountain, it's a luscious white, using grapes from old vines for added intensity. Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, lees aged for seven months with four months in oak, it's a glorious mouthful. Enjoy with creamy chicken or fish.
