Flavour Profile
Silky smooth and intensely fruity, Calado San Tasio is a characterful blend of two of Spain’s most famous grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha.
It’s made by the Bujanda family – the Rioja legends featured in Wine Spectator’s ‘Top 50 Wineries’ list nine years running. And is named after the part of the cellar dedicated to the most prized wines – the ‘calado’ – and San Anastasio – a local patron saint, affectionately known as ‘San Tasio’.
To be clear – this isn’t officially a Rioja even though it tastes like one! It’s a special-project red made using grapes carefully chosen from 40-year-old vines that best express the local character. And because it’s not a wine Bujanda normally sell, they’ve never had it classified as Rioja. Hence the great-value price for a top-name wine with lovely maturity.
Calado San Tasio is brimming with juicy black plum, blueberry and blackberry fruit, with hints of vanilla, coffee and delicate oak spice. This impressive magnum is perfect for hearty lamb dishes, grilled fish, game and aged cheeses.
