Flavour Profile
A stunning Châteauneuf-du-Pape from a renowned family estate, Clos des Papes is a hit with wine critics year after year, and it isn’t hard to see why.
The Avril family have been making wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the start of the 18th century and their Clos des Papes, founded in 1896, is a benchmark for the appellation. The estate is spread across 24 plots encompassing rocky soils, sand, limestone and gravel, with each contributing to the wine’s renowned complexity. It is only released if the vintage is deemed good enough. Fermented in stainless steel, then aged in large wooden foudres for up to 15 months, and bottled without filtration for maximum body, this wine is all about fruit.
This is a wine that is known for its ageing potential and full-bodied character. The 2023 Close des Papes has a gorgeous, elegant nose with rich blackcurrant and black cherry, with hints of dark liquorice and soft spice. The palate brings oodles of blackcurrant and blueberry fruit, with an exquisite mineral freshness and silky tannins. Decant early and serve with hearty casseroles, roast meats or game.
