From California’s Central Coast comes this tiny-production, handcrafted Syrah – a single cuvée that stood out for its power and purity. Beyond the northern Rhône, there are few places that makes such great Syrah. A top red from Maggie Harrison.

The Story Behind the Bottle
Coriolis wines are standout cuvées that deserve singular attention, so are kept aside by Maggie, former winemaker at cult winery Sin Non Qua. This is a magnificent Syrah from the White Hawk and Ben Naciedo vineyards of the Central Californian coast where, in 2019, they enjoyed a long, cool growing season and excellent conditions through harvest. Quality was exceptional but yields ridiculously low, hence the immense concentration and zipped up power of this great, black fruit and spice wine. It’s named after a 19th century French scientist who wrote a paper on the theory of water wheels in 1835 (hence the label) and the channelling of free-flowing energy into useful power. This is a fine expressive, powerful red. Decant early or cellar.
