The Spirit
It was always the dream of William Grant to have his own whisky distillery. In 1986, he started building one in Speyside, "stone by stone", assisted by his wife, seven sons and two daughters. He named it Glenfiddich – Gaelic for Valley of the Deer. Their spirit of innovation continues today with this solera-style malt. They first mature the whisky in a range of oak barrels (sherry, bourbon and new oak) for 15 years, then combine them in a large wooden ‘solera’ cask, which has been kept at least half full since 1998. This ensures that there are traces of fine Glenfiddich malt in the blend up to 26 years old. A beautifully smooth and intriguingly complex malt with five Gold medals. A perfect after-dinner dram to savour.
