The Wine
The first vine planted on the Hyland Estate was in 1971. 54 years later, the property has a reputation for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All its vineyards are planted on red volcanic soil, which lends freshness and elegance to the wines, as does their 300-metre elevation and the cooling Pacific breeze which helps slow ripening. Owner Laurent Montalieu is a vineyard fanatic, always striving to produce “the ultimate expression of terroir.” They grow different clones of both grapes and do separate bottlings, farming biodynamically too. Such exacting measures to ensure the finest wines. Using the special clone 108, this fine Chardonnay is barrel fermented and aged 11 months in French oak, 30% new. A superb rich, complex white.
