The Story Behind the Bottle
On a trip to Bordeaux in 1972 with his Colorado-banker dad, Chip Lyeth fell in love with wine. He returned home, studied winemaking at California's top spot UC Davies, and 9 years later established Lyeth Estate. His passion for Bordeaux never left and, with a handful of other pioneers, they founded the Meritage Association in 1988 – champions of top-notch Bordeaux blends of California. This was revolutionary at the time, when single varietal labels were all the fashion. Their California Red is a blend of Petite Syrah supported by Bordeaux's Merlot. Luscious black cherry, toasted hazelnuts and cocoa hints unfurl alongside velvet tannins. Ideally decant an hour beforehand and savour with a hearty casserole or roast red meats.
