The Story Behind the Bottle
Paul Draper has been winemaker at Ridge Vineyards since 1969, seven years after it was founded. Right from the beginning he was winning awards. In the renowned 1976 Judgement of Paris, it was a Ridge wine that wowed the world and beat Bordeaux First Growths, catapulting this winery and California vineyards to fame. Paul Draper is a very 'hands off' winemaker, his ethos being to give 100% dedication to the health of the vineyard to produce top grapes, then simply guiding the winemaking in the cellar. Monte Bello is their prized original vineyard. First planted in 1885, it was replanted in the 1940s. Cabernet dominated, with maturation in new US oak, this is a remarkably fine red with a wealth of dark fruit, sweet spice and nutty oak length.
