The Wine
Next door to Rioja, Navarra has always been less traditional. Its winemakers were some of the first to break rank and use imposter grape varieties. This mellow 2017, crafted from wine usually destined for their flagship Reserva Especial, is the creation of Milagros Rodriguez. She’s chief winemaker at the esteemed Señoria de Sarria estate. It lies in Puente La Reina, where two historic Camino de Santiago trails cross. Although the estate was established in 1953, it was major investment in 2001 which heralded in a new era of quality. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and old-vine Graciano, aged for two years in barrel, this is a magnificent, mellow red, packed with dark fruit and sweet spice. Best paired with grilled meats or paella.
