The Story Behind the Bottle
Fifty years ago, an unknown red wine named Sassicaia trumped the finest classed growth châteaux of Bordeaux in a blind tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon held by experts. Today it’s considered one of the greatest red wines in the world. Tenuta San Guido initially launched Guidalberto as the estate’s ‘second’ wine, but this no longer lives in Sassicaia’s shadow. It’s a wine that stands on its own feet as a Tuscan classic and has its own distinct personality. Guidalberto 2024 is supple and elegant, with wild berry fruit, cedar spice and a hint of saline mineral freshness. Delicious now but will be even better with age. Given the rising price of Sassicaia, and just how close Guidalberto is in quality these days, this is crazy good value.
