The Story Behind the Bottle
GD Vajra produces some of Barolo’s most elegant wines at their family winery in the hills above Barolo. “One of Piedmont’s best kept secrets … with sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level” said Wine Advocate. The estate was founded in 1972 by Giuseppe Domenico (hence GD), who had just graduated from university and was one of the first in Piedmont to employ organic farming methods. They have continued using these techniques for the last 50 years, gaining official certification in 2019. The grapes for this magnificent red are from a 7-hectare plot at 400-480 metres altitude, its name meaning ‘hill of violets’. Wine Advocate’s William Kelley enthuses, “This is always one of my favorite wines from this excellent producer, and I love it especially thanks to its fine nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and something a little savory like peat moss. There is a hint of ashy stone or brimstone. All of these little details emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021.” Such magnificence takes time to open out ... a superb wine that requires patience.
