The Wine
Anselmo Mendes is the top name in winemaking for Vinho Verde. So, all the more exciting that the Pereira e Cuna family at 17th century Casa Santa Eulalia bagged him to make their wines. Their 38 hectares of vineyard lie in Mondim de Basto, the highest subregion of the appellation, boasting granite soils and a perfect climate for crisp dry wines. Here, they champion the little-known red grape, Espadeiro, a speciality of the area and all grown on the Pleinas vineyard planted by Joaquim Pereira in 1962. With thick dark skins, the Espadeiro juice is quickly whisked off its skins to lend colour, but not tannins. Crisp, fragrant and lightly herbal, it makes a top aperitif as well as being excellent with seafood, salads or light meat dishes.
