The Wine
It's not often that truly great wines drop into a wine merchant's lap. Stationed in southern France, our buyer, Mark, heard rumour that magnums of the top wine from the great Roquebrun cellar were being sold off. That wine is the superb, limited-edition Seigneur d'Aupenac. Every vintage, this small premium village cellar, with its fine schist soils and high, southfacing slopes, holds back a few hundred magnums for use in shows and dinners. With the departure of Alain, their award-winning winemaker, the cellar agreed to sell the back vintages and Mark, without hesitation, said we'd take the lot. Made from Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2018 has complex notes of cassis, damson, herbs and spice. Delicious now, but decant early; or cellar.
"These magnums are the finest examples of that style that I have ever enjoyed. Decant early or keep"
