Château du Glana 2020

Saint-Julien AOC

For a well-priced Saint-Julien, look to Château du Glana. Omitted in the famous 1855 classification, its fine wines present excellent value and in the 5-Star 2020 vintage, even more so. Firm, chewy with a dark-fruit core mingling with oak spice.

Château du Glana is a well-placed Saint-Julien estate, sitting pretty between the villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, opposite the second growth Ducru-Beaucaillou. It has a long history dating back to 1870. The Meffre family acquired it in the 1960s, carrying out extensive renovations first in 1968 and in the early noughties. It started with just 5 hectares, but today, with acquisitions over the decades, has an extensive 59 hectares. They boast ideal deep gravelly soils, nearly all of it a continuous, single plot. Consultant in 2020 was Christophe Olivier, who insisted on an elegant, expressive style, vinified in cement vats and aged just 40% in new oak. It's drinking very well now and over the next decade. Open early and decant.
