A fear of heights is a non-starter for those working in the vineyards of Terroirs du Vertige. Perched perilously on the slopes by Peyrepertuse Castle – an ancient Cathar fortress some 800m high in the Pyrenees – collecting these intensely fruited, aromatic grapes is not for the faint-hearted. Luckily for us, winemaker Benjamin Andrieu and his team are willing to put fear aside. The result is a red with bright fruit flavour and seductively spiced notes. Those typical Syrah aromas dominate with ample, ripe blackcurrant fruit and spicy, peppery notes, while the splashes of Grenache and Carignan add even more depth and body. We recommend decanting or pouring into large glasses and serving with grilled meats, hearty lasagne or aubergine bake.
