James Suckling described this fabulous 98pt red from northwest Spain as “A mind-blowing Ribeira Sacra red with pure fruit.” It honours native grapes Mencia, Brancellao, Merezino and Caíño, grown on slopes as steep as 60°. Racy, fresh and complex.

The Wine
The first vines were planted in Ribeira Sacra by the Romans, and terracing perfected on its steep, 45° degree slopes by monks in the 6th century. It was an important wine region until the Spanish Civil War, when forests took over, and poverty too. Founder Fernando González discovered the region in 1979, setting up an estate on the slopes stretching up from the Sil river. He discovered abandoned vineyards and slowly restored them to the 30 hectares he now has, some as steep as 60°. This is their remarkable 98pt Mencia and Brancellao blend, grown on schist and slate soils. Raspberry, cherry and blackberry underscored by tight, graphite and mineral freshness. A red of pure refinement. “Complex, nuanced and full of nerve”(JS). Remarkable.
