The Wine
Leasingham is one of the great icon names of Australian wine. They were founded in 1893, but only started planting Riesling in the Clare Valley after WW2. That wasn't the norm back then - red grapes such as Cabernet and Shiraz were usual. Grapes for the Leasingham Classic are nearly all from a one-hectare parcel in this premium, cooler climate region, all of it planted on red loam over slate. This unique soil brings out the purity and freshness in the wine. Australian critic James Halliday awards the 2012 an outstanding 98 points, while the International Wine Challenge gave it Gold. Showing at its best, the 2012 white shows pure lime, green apple fruit and minerality, with richer creamier notes stealing in. A superb partner with seafood.
