Mâcon-Loché

Suckling wrote that Giroux’s wines prove you “don’t need a 1er designation to rock the chardonnay world!” This fine, complex Mâcon-Loché white is from a tiny parcel of vines, fermented and aged partly in oak. Creamy, honeyed peach with spicy length.

The Wine
Despite being a designated appellation since 1937, Mâcon-Loché is the Mâconnais’s least known subregion. It has just 25 hectares under vine, a portion of which belongs to Olivier Giroux at his 7th-generation family estate. All together Olivier has 8.6 hectares of vines, with plots in Pouilly-Loché, Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon-Loché, all of which he tends organically, without seeking certification. En Pret de Fôret is a half-hectare parcel of superb 25-year-old vines, southeast-facing and planted on clay-limestone soils. Fermentation and ageing in stainless steel (75%) and seasoned oak barrels has resulted in this rich, spiced white Burgundy with exceptional complexity. Very fine now, or cellar. Ideal with seafood or creamy white meat dishes.
