The Wine
If you love generous ripe fruit and spice in your glass, similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape but with less intensity (and at a much friendlier price), look to Cairanne. This cru village appellation, just east of Orange, is renowned for velvety Grenache with a dash of Syrah. This red wine comes from family-owned Domaine Martin, founded in 1905 when Julien Martin bought the property and a small plot of vines. In 1947, his son Jules expanded the vineyards and built the winery, laying the foundations for the domaine’s future success. Today, grandsons David and Eric carry on the legacy, crafting wines with real charm. Brimming with supple, spicy bramble fruit, it’s ideal alongside hearty casseroles, roast lamb, or own its own as a warming red.
